Pesticides and lack of native plants causing steep decrease in bird numbers
Great article in the New York Timesdiscussing how bird populations have decreased by 1/3 overall, with some species suffering almost a 70% decline. And it’s not just birds in agricultural areas, it is a widespread problem.
The causes are pesticides and lack of habitat to support the birds and the insects they need to thrive.
We can help the birds by not using pesticides in our yards, and by planting native plants for habitat.
Of course, if these pesticides are bad for birds they are bad for people, too. We protect our water quality and our families health by the same simple methods that protect the birds.
