ONE TENTH OF EUROPE’S WILD BEES FACE EXTINCTION/REUTERS
“Almost one in 10 of Europe’s wild bee species is at risk of extinction because of threats from the spread of farms and pesticides among other factors, a first assessment of the continent’s bee populations showed on Thursday.” The bees are essential to crop production and feeding a growing world population. But they are also an indicator that these chemicals are harmful to all of us and to the wider ecosystem. This spring we can make our backyards refuges for bees, birds, and butterflies by simply refraining from using pesticides. Planting native plants gives them a big added boost, too.
