GOOD NEWS FOR BATS (NOT FOR MOSQUITOES!)
University of California at Santa Cruz researchers have found that a bacteria that occurs naturally on some bats may be helpful in controlling the fungal disease, White Nose syndrome, responsible for massive bat die-offs across the country.
The bacteria inhibited the fungus in the laboratory. They are now testing live bats, and if that works they will start a field trial.
Let’s hope they are successful. In the meantime, give bats a chance to stay healthy and cut down on the mosquito population by not using pesticides and either planting trees like shag bark hickory where they can live under the bark, or putting up bat houses. Pesticides weaken them and make them more susceptible to diseases. Bats are important pollinators, too.
